Early-Career Artist Initiative
Cartwheel

25-26 Cartwheel artists: Peggy Aitken, Tara Barrington, Charlie Bajorek, Claire Burke, Steph Grey, Kasey Tudor, Lochie Vardy, Liam Waterman and Laura Weynton.
Mid-Program EOIs
We’re excited to be opening up the second half of this year’s program to two early career artists aged 18-30. If this is you, and you would love to connect with like-minded creative people from all arts disciplines, while learning how to navigate a career in the arts, please apply.
These two successful artists will join the program for monthly meetings in June, July, August, September and October, with a fully-funded place (i.e. free) thanks to City of Newcastle.
All you have to do is email our Creative Director Nel (nel@tantrum.org.au) and answer the question: What is your arts practice, and how will the Cartwheel program help build your career?
Please note that applicants must be available for the next Cartwheel workshop: 2:30-5:30pm, 13 June 2026.
EOIs are due by 11:59pm on Sunday 31 May 2026.
About Cartwheel
Now in its second cycle, Cartwheel is 12-month program that will connect, inspire and support up to 10 early-career artists in the Hunter region to advance their creative careers.
Through a carefully curated calendar of professional development opportunities, Cartwheel artists will undertake masterclasses and workshops, take excursions to see professional contemporary work, and attend industry events that will place them at the centre of the professional arts sector.
Cartwheel artists will also be forming their own community of early-career artists, a network of support that is crucial for sustainable arts careers, and one that will last beyond the tenure of the program.
Cartwheel 25-26 is proudly supported by City of Newcastle.
